Seeking Credit for Your Undergraduate Internship?
If you are a UO business, accounting, or pre-business major, please review the information below. If you are not a business student, please check with the UO Career Center regarding their Internship for Credit options.

1. Do you need the credit?
Students seek internship credit for a variety of reasons:
- International business students are required to register for at least 1 internship credit to comply with CPT requirements. You may register for more if you meet the hours listed in the table below.
- Domestic business students may opt for credit if:
- Their internship employer requires students to receive college credit for their internship experience.
- Adding upper division credits would meet the needs of their academic plan.
- Accounting majors can earn 4 upper division accounting credits with an internship (ACTG 404) that will count towards their CPA eligibility. Speak with a CPA advisor in the School of Accounting for more information.
How to decide if seeking credit is right for you?
- Speak with an Academic Advisor to find out whether registering for internship credit(s) would make sense given your specific academic and graduation goals. It’s important to weigh the costs and benefits of pursuing internship credit.
- If you are an international student, meet with ISSS.
- If you are pursuing a Certified Public Accountant career path, be sure to meet with the CPA advisors. See the latest Accounting Digest email to book an appointment.
How many credits am I eligible for?
ACTG 404 is offered for 4 credits. You must work at least 120 hours in your internship over the course of the term to be eligible for ACTG 404.
BA 404 is offered for 1-4 credits. You can choose how many credits you register for, as long as you will be working at least 30 hours per credit over the term.
Number of Credits | Total hours worked per term |
---|---|
1 | at least 30 |
2 | at least 60 |
3 | at least 90 |
4 | 120 or more |
For example, if your internship will be 4 hours per week over 10 weeks (40 hours total), you may only register for 1 credit. If you will work 10 hours per week over 10 weeks (100 hours total), you can choose whether you want to register for 1, 2, or 3 credits.
2. Internship Criteria
- The internship must run for at least four weeks over the term and total 30 hours worked per credit earned.
- The internship must be project-based or involve industry-specific learning activities or skill development.
- Unpaid internships that can be used for credit must follow the Fair Labor Standards Act internship criteria.
- The organization must define your position as an internship and allocate time and resources to identifying mutual goals and providing supervision, feedback, and evaluation.
