Plant Your Pivot

Download and complete the “Plant Your Pivot” section of the MBA Workbook. Upload the Excel sheet or link to Google Doc in Canvas for your career consultant to review.

Purpose

Career pivots, such as the one many of you are embarking on, start with understanding yourself. What are the Values, Interests, Personality traits, and Strengths (VIPS) that you are “planting” your career pivot in? This assignment focuses on helping you identify some VIPS and understand the “Pivot Method” by Jenny Blake as a framework for your career pivot through the Oregon MBA.

Process

  1. Watch the PIVOT Method Webinar, 1:40 – 34:20 (you can read the book, if you prefer). Focus on understanding the Pivot Method Framework, which we will use throughout your OMBA as a way to discuss your career pivot.
  2. Complete the exercises in the video and compile your thoughts in the “Plant” section of the OMBA Career Workbook to share with your career strategy consultant. You are welcome to use pen and paper and then transfer some of your final thoughts into the workbook.
  3. Complete the CliftonStrengths Assessment (formerly known as StrengthsFinder) and the reflection questions in the workbook.
A code with instructions to take the CliftonStrengths Assessment will be sent to you separately via your uoregon.edu email address. If you’ve taken it before, you are welcome to take it again, or simply use your previous results for the assignment. We send the codes out each week on Mondays. If you would like your code sooner, please email your uoregon email address to JD Van Alstyne (jdv@uoregon.edu).
