“When should I start applying for internships and jobs for next summer?”

Short Answer: NOW!

I know it might sound ridiculous, but it’s true. If you are looking for an internship or a full time job at a competitive company, to begin in summer 2024, you need to start applying now. (By “competitive” I mean Fortune 500 companies and well-known brands where lots of people want to work.)

Have all companies posted their internships and jobs already? No.

Will there be opportunities throughout the year? Absolutely. But if you want my advice, start today.

“But school just started! Do I really have to start now?!”

Yes, yes you do.

Let me explain. A high majority of schools are on the semester system, which means many recruiters have matched their recruiting calendars to that popular semester system. So, many recruiting cycles start early.

My advice… control what you can control. You can’t control when school starts. You can control what you choose to do with your time.

“What does it even mean to get started?”

Good question. My colleague Pauline lists a few great options here.

I spend lots of time talking to alums and recruiters. I’d love to share what I hear from them. I will be hosting some casual coffee chat sessions in 140 Lillis every Wednesday this fall term from 10am-11am. Stop by for free coffee and a chat. No pressure. No prep. Just hang out. Have coffee and talk.

I know many of you are anxious about career stuff. I also know that you are excited about your future. It’s normal to feel different emotions about the same thing, at the same time.

Choose steps to move forward.

I believe you can do it.

Let’s go!
