Job Description:
The Outdoor Program’s mission is to inspire learning through student-powered outdoor adventure. We facilitate local trips as well as far-reaching expeditions, and provide a wide range of gear rentals, resources, and clinics. We are also home to the UO (University of Oregon) Bike Program—providing bike rentals, events, and maintenance classes. We are here to foster healthy and balanced outdoor lives, and as such all our initiatives reflect our core values of adventure, active lives, inclusive community, environmental stewardship, cooperation, and student empowerment.
This Outdoor Program Employee position will work at both Outdoor Program locations on campus- The DIY Bike shop and the Rental Barn. OP Employee’s do not need specific outdoor or bike maintenance experience but should have a desire to learn. Students who have an open mind and the ability to learn/ seek out new skills and opportunities will thrive in this position. This position will also be required to plan, propose, and lead trips, clinics, and events for students, while following UO best practices and policies as it relates to the Outdoor Program (OP).
This position will be open until May 5th. The position will begin training in September 2024 and continue working throughout the 24/25 school year. The hiring process will begin Spring 2024. This position will work approximately 10-20 hours per week, with some flexibility.
Job Duties:
- Work with other OP Staff on a wide variety of projects
- Take on leadership roles of outings, events and trips which may take place on evenings or weekends
- Assist students and community members in renting, reserving, and using outdoor equipment- including water sports, hiking, snow, and camping gear.
- General maintenance of a wide variety of outdoor equipment, tools, and supplies at the Rental Barn and Bike Shop
- Support Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Bike Program Workspace visitors
- Provide visitors with quality customer service and up-to-date information about biking, bike storage, gear rentals, and outdoor areas on and around campus.
- Monitor, inventory, and stock products and equipment
- Create marketing materials for proposed events, trips, and clinics
- Represent the program in a professional manner at university and community events such as film festivals, campus-wide events
- Independently clock in and out using UKG (University timekeeping system)
- Attend all-staff, bike program, and rental barn meetings- 3 or more mandatory meetings per term
- General office duties as assigned- recycling, answering phones, checking the mail, etc.
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Applicant must be a student at UO
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Experience with and passion for the outdoors
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Excellent leadership skills
- Ability to work independently and with a team
- Ability to network with and serve diverse visitors
- A desire to learn about outdoor gear and activities
- Flexible schedules, ability to work Mon-Fri 12-5, with some weekend activities
- Ability to frequently lift 50 pounds
- Knowledge and understanding of DEI Industry Standards and a willingness to learn more
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
- Ability to stay informed about industry trends and best practices to continuously improve program quality and relevance.
- CPR & First Aid Certification or an ability to become certified
Desired Qualifications:
- Previous bike mechanic experience, or experience with bike repair, maintenance, and confidence working with tools.
- Previous experience organizing, leading, or guiding outdoor activities (hiking, kayaking, biking, etc.)
- Great attention to detail and high standards for organization
- Experience with outdoor equipment maintenance and repair; such as rafts, kayaks, snowboards, skis, tents, sleeping bags, etc.
- Work Study applicants preferred
- Exceptional written and verbal communication
- Experience with Microsoft Suite and other computer programs utilized by the University of Oregon
- Ability to commit multiple terms to working at the Outdoor Program; first year/second year students encouraged to apply
- Valid Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness First Aid, or CPR & First Aid Certification
