Joining a Student Organization Might Be Your Best Career Move

If you’re looking for ways to build experience and stand out before your first internship, don’t overlook joining a student club. This can be one of the most practical, career-building experiences you’ll have in college.

For business major Shantam Tyagi, joining a professional student organization has been a powerful way to build real-world skills, grow his confidence, expand his network, and gain leadership experience that employers notice. Here’s how he describes his experience with the Oregon Blockchain Group:

“[It] was one of the best decisions of my college experience. The friends and connections I’ve made, the places I have visited, and the professional career development that I have gotten through the group have been vital in shaping my trajectory.

I joined the Oregon Blockchain Group in the fall of my sophomore year. I joined the Venture Capital branch as an analyst and learned from the seniors and juniors about the ever-changing world of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. I learned so much from those who had been in the group before me and the members of management that guided me through this new and confusing environment that they were all so passionate about.

I gave my first pitch the term after with my good friend Justin. Diving into a crypto project I knew nothing about and coming out as the expert was a super rewarding and valuable experience.

Afterwards, I became the Director of Marketing, responsible for upholding and maintaining the brand image of the group. I am currently in charge of running the social media accounts, creating all the graphics, updating the website, and creating our weekly updates, as well as the recruitment efforts.

Both roles, and being in the group itself, have been incredibly important in helping me build my professional skill set, teaching me how to act in professional settings, network with industry professionals, and build confidence in myself and my abilities. The group has brought me many opportunities to further my career as well.

Whether it’s through attending conferences, making valuable connections, or the opportunities that come from being in the group itself, I have found that being in an on-campus professional club helps greatly with employers and makes you stand out as a college student.

The things you learn, the opportunities you get, the places you go, and the connections you make are once in a lifetime.”

If you’re wondering whether joining a club is “worth it,” Shantam’s experience shows how on-campus involvement can translate directly into professional skills, leadership experience, and industry connections. The right organization doesn’t just fill your schedule—it can help shape your career direction and make you more competitive when it’s time to apply for internships and jobs.
