Key Takeaways from BizCareers: Marketing, Sales, Operations, and Analytics

On January 28, Mohr Career Services hosted a panel and networking event in collaboration with the UO American Marketing Association Chapter (AMA), Operations Business Analytics Club (OBAC), and the UO Sales Club. The event brought recruiters and representatives from more than 20 companies to campus to connect with students interested in marketing, sales, operations, and analytics.

As a Career Peer Educator with Mohr Career Services, I usually support these events behind the scenes. This time, however, I was excited to attend from a student perspective and focus on learning directly from industry professionals.

The evening began with a panel discussion featuring leaders from Databricks, Valtech, Amazon, Brooks Running, and NBCUniversal. Hosted by marketing professor Connor Hendrix, the panel explored how artificial intelligence is being used across industries. A consistent message from the panelists was the importance of staying curious as AI continues to evolve. Rather than replacing creativity or critical thinking, they emphasized that AI can be a tool to enhance both when it’s used thoughtfully.

Following the panel, the event moved to the atrium for a networking session where company representatives met one-on-one with students. The turnout was strong, and the energy in the room reflected how eager students were to ask questions and learn more about different career paths. I had several meaningful conversations with both recruiters and Lundquist representatives. One that stood out was my discussion with Nick Crabb, who shared insight into his personal sustainability efforts within Amazon. The networking portion gave us the opportunity to ask questions that felt personally relevant and begin building professional connections. Many of my classmates left inspired by their conversations with recruiters, even discussing future internship or mentorship opportunities!

One of the most impactful parts of the evening was seeing students helping other students throughout the process. Peers jumped in to encourage hesitant classmates to start conversations with professionals and introduce themselves. This community never fails to impress me! Recruiters also shared positive feedback, expressing that UO students came prepared and professional—an encouraging sign for future opportunities for Ducks.

Overall, the event offered valuable insights into how industry leaders are approaching AI while reinforcing the importance of curiosity, preparation, and connection. Thank you to everyone who helped organize the event, the recruiters who engaged so openly with students, and the students who took meaningful steps toward their careers. I’m already looking forward to the next BizCareers event!
