When Shane Ryan (‘17) graduated from the University of Oregon with degrees in business administration and economics and a minor in computer information technology, he had already built the foundation for a dynamic career in management consulting and corporate strategy.
Shane has worked for Rockwell Automation in corporate strategy, for software company Zuora on their think-tank and external advisory team, and for Capgemini in management consulting. Today, he’s a full-time MBA candidate at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth (Class of 2027), continuing to build on the global perspective and analytical mindset he first developed at the Lundquist College.
Experiences That Shaped His Career Path
Shane’s undergraduate years were filled with opportunities that gave him confidence, experience, and direction in his future career:
Semester at Sea Study Abroad
Studying international marketing, consumer behavior, and the economics of sustainable development aboard a ship gave Shane a rare firsthand look at global business. The experience helped him develop the confidence to live and work anywhere, and expanded his professional network before graduation.
Toastmasters
Joining Toastmasters became a pivotal experience for Shane. He learned the value of taking risks and practicing new skills in a supportive environment. The experience gave him confidence in public speaking and strengthened his ability to communicate effectively.
Business Strategy and Planning Course with Doug Wilson
This course offered Shane his first formal exposure to business strategy and planning. The class emphasized teamwork, research, and creative analysis—skills that mirrored the kind of problem-solving required in consulting—and inspired him to pursue a career in management consulting.
Internship Experience
Completing a business internship the summer before graduation strengthened Shane’s resume and provided him with with hands-on professional experience that helped him stand out to recruiters.
Advice for Current Students
Reflecting on his own journey, Shane encourages students to take advantage of the networks and resources available while at the college.
He shared that he wishes he had understood the value of networking before graduation earlier. “I wish I was less afraid to reach out to alumni and learn directly from them. Many have been there before and know what it was like—they are happy to help.”
He also recommends that students interested in consulting or strategy explore the UO Investment Group and Oregon Consulting Group—both excellent ways to learn more about these potential career paths (and stay connected with alums from the clubs after graduating).
