As we move into March, the days are getting longer, and the promise of spring is just around the corner. This season is a great time to focus on building and sustaining valuable connections that can pave the way for future success.
Here are some strategies to help you navigate this journey with confidence and optimism:
Proactive Networking Strategies
1. Reach out to alumni
Alumni are a treasure trove of expertise and advice. They’ve walked the path you’re on and can offer valuable insights. Start by identifying alumni in your field of interest and reach out to them through Lundquist Connect or LinkedIn. A simple message expressing your interest in their career path and a request for a brief career chat or informational interview is an easy way to start the connection. Check our past blog post Lundquist Connect 101: Networking in a Digital World for a step-by-step guide.
2. Attend industry events
We’re working hard to bring employers and alumni to you in spring term. Look out for the Spring Internship and Career Expo on April 17 as well as “Industry Bites” events during weeks 3-8, where you can engage in smaller discussions with alumni panelists focused on specific industries. Employers are also hosting tons of their own virtual info sessions. You can find event details on Handshake.
3. Leverage social media
Platforms like LinkedIn are powerful tools for networking. Follow industry leaders, join the University of Oregon group and other professional groups you’re interested in, and share your own insights and experiences to build your personal brand. Networking is most effective when you take initiative—engage with others, share your insights, and build genuine professional connections!
Self-Care and Maintaining Momentum
1. Prioritize your mental health
The job market can be exhausting, and it’s essential to refill your tank. Set aside time each day for activities that help you relax and recharge, whether it’s reading, meditating, or spending time with loved ones. The UO Duck Nest has great resources and programming to help you find balance.
2. Move your body
Incorporating movement or physical activity into your routine is a great way to boost your energy and maintain a positive outlook. Eugene’s winters may be cold and wet, but there are still opportunities to get outside. For instance, you can put on your rain gear and hike up Spencer’s Butte, join a GroupX class at the Rec, or take a walk around campus. Moving your body can improve your mood and help you stay focused in periods of stress.
3. Set bite-sized goals
It’s important to set achievable goals for your networking efforts and job search to help you maintain momentum and stay motivated. Break down your larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks. And don’t forget to celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small!
Maintaining your career momentum as spring approaches requires a proactive approach and a commitment to self-care. Remember, every connection you make and every step you take brings you closer to your goals. And you have a whole team who is here to support you.
