On Tuesday, May 24, I attended Industry Bites: Getting the Job featuring special guest experts Angela Sparks (Moss Adams), Brandon Nguyen (Oregon Health & Science University), and JD Van Alstyne (UO Mohr Career Services).
Here are my top takeaways from the incredible conversation:
1. It’s a great way to get in the minds of recruiters at large companies
Students get to ask questions and really dive into topics relating to recruiting, interviewing, and the application process as a whole. Panelists that come to speak are usually extremely generous in giving students relevant information about how to put their best foot forward in the hiring process.
For instance, Brandon Nguyen highlighted the importance of making a good impression and gave useful and practical tips for networking and building relationships effectively in the process.
2. You can learn specifics of what companies are looking for in a candidate
For instance, on Tuesday, Angela Sparks gave great insights into what Moss Adams and other accounting and consulting firms are looking for in their candidates. She shed light on how different experience is viewed and evaluated on a resume, and she shared some very specific stories about past candidates who did an amazing job at standing out.
3. Information is contextualized for you as a student
We were very lucky to have our graduate career advisor, JD Van Alstyne, as an honorary host of the meeting. He ensure that students were able to digest the words of wisdom the guest experts shared with us and really contextualize the advice that students were receiving.
