Forget endlessly scrolling through job postings–there’s an even more powerful way to job search that’s often overlooked: your alumni network. Alumni can offer you huge value in navigating that crucial next step after graduation and can be the foundation to your growing professional network.
Online job applications have their place, but they lack the human connection that can make all the difference. On the other hand, alumni can empathize with your situation, provide targeted advice, offer industry insights, and even open doors to job and internship opportunities.
Here’s why I think connecting with alumni should be your top priority:
1. They get you.
Alumni can understand the unique challenges you face as a Lundquist student. They’ve literally been there and done that. They can empathize with what you’re going through and can help bridge the gap between classroom and career.
2. Get job insights beyond the buzzwords.
Job descriptions are full of generic skills and requirements. Alumni can give you the real scoop on what specific skills and experiences are most valued in your desired field. They can help you tailor your resume and help you tell your story, so it resonates with potential employers.
3. Find out about unadvertised opportunities.
Right or wrong, many companies prioritize referrals from trusted sources, like alumni. The reality is that connecting with alumni at a particular company might give you a significant edge in the application process. Alumni may even be aware of job openings within their network that have yet to be posted, giving you a leg up on the competition.
Tapping into the alumni network
Reaching out might feel difficulty, but it’s actually way easier than you think! I recommend using LinkedIn to search for alumni in your desired industry, job function, or location — and don’t be afraid to send a personalized message expressing your interest in their career path and respectfully requesting an informational interview (a casual conversation where you can learn about their career). You can also use the Lundquist Connect platform to find alumni to reach out to.
A couple reminders to keep in mind along the way:
- Manage your expectations. You may have to reach out to 10-15 people to set up one phone call.
- Come prepared. Research the alum and their company in advance of an informational interview and prep about 5 insightful questions you’d like to ask them.
- Express gratitude for their time. You may not want to hear this, but these people don’t owe you anything. Getting ghosted? Move on. Reach out to five more. Keep going.

In fact, the more you engage others, the more confidence you will gain. Alumni can offer a wealth of knowledge, support, and potential opportunities you won’t find anywhere else. Leverage your alumni network and watch how much momentum you’ll gain in your career journey.
