How To Make It In Marketing

Students gather in a conference room watching panelists present on making it in marketing.

On Tuesday, April 16, I attended Industry Bites: Make it in Marketing featuring special guest experts Nicholas Yarger, Darcey Howard, and Amy Delaney.

Here are my biggest takeaways from this panel discussion:

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)

All three professionals talked about how Generative AI is the biggest and most exciting innovation within the industry. They see it as something to be embraced within the marketing field instead of shied away from, as it will take out a lot of the bulk work, make design more accessible, and keep lots of room for the human creative mind to flourish.

Diverse Skills and Knowledge

The field of marketing appreciates diverse skills and knowledge. Students were curious if there is a chance to leverage their non-marketing backgrounds in the marketing industry. The speakers highlighted their own diverse backgrounds to illustrate that marketing is an open-ended and ever-evolving field. Various specialties are valued in marketing and learning new skills is highly encouraged.

Making Connections

In the marketing industry, connections are crucial, and the ability to build strong relationships is key. The panelists attributed their success to pursuing their passions and choosing the industries they want to work in. Being passionate about your work, and the people you work with is the key to success.

If you haven’t attended an Industry Bite event yet, check it out. These panel discussions provide insights from companies and industries. It is an easy way to connect with UO alumni and other professionals right here at Lundquist.
