Winter Term is Here—Time to Rev Up Your Internship and Job Search!
We see it every winter. Students return from Winter Break full of resolve, ready to jump in and find an opportunity. Great! It’s time to get proactive and follow the three P’s.
Prepare
- Be sure your resume is up to date. Add course projects and any experience you gained recently.
- Create a cover letter that highlights skills relevant to the types of opportunities you plan to target.
- Stop by Drop-in from 10am to 4pm, Monday through Friday, in Lillis 155 to have your resume and cover letter reviewed by our peer advising team.
Participate
- In the UO Winter Career & Internship Expo 2024, networking events (many companies hold virtual events, so watch for those), show up for BizPaths: Internship Edition, attend Industry Bites, and be sure to be present at club meetings featuring speakers.
- Find alumni or others who work at companies you are targeting and reach out to connect on LinkedIn—ask for an informational interview and get a better sense of what companies are seeking.
- Watch for positions on Handshake, LinkedIn, and other job boards—apply when you see something interesting.
Persist
- Follow up with networking contacts after an initial meeting and with recruiters after applying for a position.
- If you are not getting interviews, have your resume reviewed—by Mohr Career Services staff, by professionals in the field, etc. You may need to make some adjustments.
- Continue to build your network. Keep talking to people. Attend more networking events and info sessions. Apply to more positions.
Landing an internship or job opportunity can feel more like a marathon than a sprint. Stay focused, stay positive, and keep going. And, if you need help along the way, schedule an appointment with a Career Advisor. We are here to help you stay on track!
