Top 5 Recruiter Tips – Deloitte

Recently, I interviewed Emily Lopez, a Campus Recruiter from Deloitte. Deloitte is one of the Big Four public accounting firms and they typically recruit tax and audit interns/associates from the University of Oregon, along with some consulting roles. I asked this recruiter for advice for undergraduate students as they start navigating the career search process.

Tip #1: Build your network

No matter what your dream job is, Lopez recommends getting your foot in the door by networking with professionals or other students. There are plenty of opportunities at UO to make connections at clubs or events. You can stay up to date with Lundquist’s networking opportunities by looking at the “events” tab on Handshake.

Tip #2: Perfect your documents

Your resume and cover letter are crucial when preparing to enter the workforce. Lopez stresses the importance of both, and said, “Cover letters are great, especially if you’re not able to make certain events. If you can’t meet a recruiter or professionals, we love a cover letter because it helps us to see who you are and your passion.” If you’re not confident in your resume or cover letter, stop by Mohr Career Services for drop-in advising!

Tip #3: Start gaining skills

While gaining accounting-specific experience can be tricky as an undergraduate student, you can still start working on building your personal skills. Lopez emphasizes the importance of team-building, communication, writing and presentation skills.

Tip #4: Round out your experiences

When it comes to applying for an internship or job in an accounting role, most of the applicants will look identical on paper. To make yourself stand out, Lopez suggests you leverage any clubs, sports or other extracurricular activities you participate in.

Tip #5: You don’t have to be an expert

It can feel intimidating to apply for an internship or entry-level position without having much experience. Lopez said, “We know that you’re a student. We know that especially in accounting, you don’t take a lot of accounting courses until you’re later in your degree, so sometimes you’re doing a junior internship and you won’t have certain classes. So I would say the more you can have a presence versus tangible practice, I would definitely recommend that.”
